The best free throw shooting youngsters in the entire North Region of Connecticut gathered in early March at Northwest Catholic High School for a regional level contest in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. Plainville was represented by four of its local champs in the competition that would determine who would compete at the State level contest. 10-year-old Amanda Peters, 11-year-old Nick D’Amico, 12-year-old Sarah Thompson and 13-year-old Abigail Negro were using their skills against the all the district winners from the northern part of the state. Sarah and Abby won in their age groups and earned spots in the state contest which was held March 28 in West Hartford. At the state final there are four contestants in each age group, one each from North, South, East and West regions. Many hours of practice were evident from these top contestants as displayed by the consistent good form and high numbers of shots made. The Plainville champs performed well but it was not their year to be state winners. Following the competition, all the contestants and families were treated to an awards banquet where Sarah and Abby were presented with their regional championship trophies.
