Council hears assistant town manager's recap

Last night, Assistant Town Manager Shirley Osle presented her monthly report to the Town Council Jan. 7 about happenings in Plainville.

The Plainville Family Resource Network is offering two eight week parenting workshops starting Jan. 28. One session will be Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., lunch and childcare provided, and the other will be Monday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (dinner and childcare provided). Parents, teachers and childcare providers are welcome.

These workshops focus on: How to "wire" children for self-control; How to set limits and get lasting results; Learn the skills needed to respond to any discipline situation. Change your perception of conflict and help gain control of your life; and Learn how to foster a cooperative environment by using daily situations to build character and social skills. Space is limited. To enroll, call the Plainville Family Resource Network tat (860) 793-6304. These programs are funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain.

The Plainville Public Library's re-designed Web site is on-line at www.plainvillelibrary.org. Pat Rein worked with a Plainville design company, 4-Biz, for the new look. It features upcoming programs and on-line databases more prominently. Pat will be maintaining it.

A resident called last week to ask that I remind everyone during ‘Happenings' to please slow down in front of the post office. The resident has witnessed many vehicles going at excessive speeds for the area and is afraid someone will get hurt.

Contemporary Issues Class meets Mondays, at 10:00 a.m., at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center for discussion of current events.

Outdoor Adventure Group has many exciting trips planned for the winter including snowshoeing, hiking, indoor snorkeling and indoor kayaking. Call the senior center at (860) 747-5728 for further details.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Education and Support Group meets Thursday, Jan. 17, 10:30 a.m., at the Plainville Public Library, 56 E. Main St. Guest Speaker will be Probate Judge Heidi Famiglietti. Call the senior center at (860) 747-5728 to register.

Senior Net computer courses will again be offered at the Plainville Senior Citizen Center beginning with a free Beginners Workshop, Jan. 23 and Jan 30. Other classes scheduled are Computer Fundamentals, Internet and E-mail. Classes require registration and are open to anyone over age 50. Please call or stop by the senior center for information. Please fill out a survey of computer classes you would like to take as well. They want to offer the classes you need and want.

The Assessor's office continues to process the 2007 Grand List, preparing for completion by Jan. 31.

Approximately 200 letters to Elderly Homeowners were mailed out today, notifying them that it is time for them to refile for their homeowners benefits. Actual appointments will begin the week of Feb. 4. Anyone not currently on the program who thinks they are eligible should contact the Assessor's Office after Feb. 1 to make an appointment.

Applications for additional veterans benefits will also begin the week of Feb. 4. Any eligible Veterans should also contact the Assessors Office after Feb. 1.

Beginning this year, the Assessor's Office will start taking applications for the newly adopted Local Option Freeze Program. Any elderly citizen age 70 or over who is interested in obtaining information and/or applying for this program should call the Assessor's Office, (860) 7793-0221, ext. 242, after Feb. 1.

The Library reports that their first Sunday opening was very successful. They had more than 100 patrons.
