In what has become a fall classic in charity golf tournaments, the Crowley Juvenile Diabetes Golf Tournament is poised this year to reach $700,000 – and beyond – in its lifetime donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. The tournament, begun 14 years ago by Crowley Auto Group Chairman Ken Crowley, has raised more than $653,000 in donations to JDRF. Crowley, a longtime member of the North Central Connecticut JDRF board, is hoping to exceed the $700,000 mark with this year’s tournament, set for Sunday, Sept. 12 at Gillette Ridge Golf Course, 1360 Hall Boulevard, Bloomfield, with a cookout at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
“Registration and sponsorship have been just tremendous,” said Crowley. “We’re expecting a full field of teams and we have high hopes that we’ll be making another substantial donation to the fight against juvenile diabetes. We have players return year after year and to whom this cause has become very important. They understand how important their donations are to one day finding a cure.”
As many as three million Americans have juvenile – or type 1 – diabetes. Each year, more than 15,000 children — 40 per day — are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the United States. It is a chronic illness with no cure, but advances in treatment are being made through research – much of it done right here in Connecticut at the Yale Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center.
This year’s Crowley Juvenile Diabetes Golf Tournament will feature an array of prizes, including a new car or an Atlantic City vacation for that highly skilled — or just plain lucky — player who can deliver the ever-elusive, but not impossible, hole in one.
“I’d be thrilled to see someone get a hole in one!” said Crowley. “I’ve never done it myself, but I hold out hope. Mostly, I just want to see us raise a record amount of money and present another nice big check to JDRF. There are millions of kids depending on us.”
