Participants in programs at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., must be 60 or older and be a resident of Plainville, or be a member of the senior citizens center, unless noted. Free groceries
from Foodshare

The Foodshare Organization delivers free food to low income individuals. Plainville has been chosen to have a Mobile Foodshare site at the Plainville Housing Authority, 20 Stillwell Drive, Sunset Community Room on Monday, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Groceries are distributed every other Monday. The next distribution will be Feb. 8 and 22.

This program is available to Plainville residents who are at least 62 years old or permanently disabled under the Social Security Act. The first time in the program, bring proof of age and residency.

From Memory
To Memoir

From Memory To Memoir Writing and Preserving Your Life Story will be held Fridays, Feb. 5 to March 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St. Participants will learn how to turn memories of significant events into a memoir for family and friends. Tips will include what pictures and documents to use and how to self publish the story. No previous writing experience is required.

Achieving peak
power

The Peak Power program is a six-week program of exercise designed by a personal fitness consultant to help people achieve goals of better health and fitness. Introductory sessions will be offered Monday, Feb. 8, at 2:30 p.m., or Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. (Participants only need to attend one). The session will include program presentation and question and answer time.

Participants will meet with a trainer prior to the beginning of the program. At that time, goals will be established, baseline measurements of cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, height, weight, body measurements, body composition, and a flexibility evaluation will be recorded. For the next six weeks the participants will meet to exercise together and evaluate the program. Measurements will be done half way and at the end. Graduation from the program, after six weeks, will include a guide for future goal achievements and t-shirts will be awarded.

New snow
day policy

The Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., has adopted a new snow day policy. When the public schools in Plainville are closed due to snow, the senior center will have no meals, no classes, no bingo or setback tournament, and no band jam.

As town employees, the staff reports to work and the senior center will be open. The staff is always available to answer questions, provide social services, talk to caregivers, etc. Seniors are welcome to play cards, shoot pool, use the computers or socialize with friends.

Choral group
meets Feb. 5

The choral group at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., will meet on Friday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m.

Computer fundamentals
course one

On Fridays, Feb. 5 and 12, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Bob Erlich will be at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., to teach about computers, Windows, editing documents, and saving and using documents on the hard drive or flash drive. There is a fee for these two classes.

Women’s
breakfast

Women’s breakfast will be held at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 8 a.m.

Bus goes
door to door

The shopping bus provides door-to-door transportation to shopping destinations on Mondays. The bus picks up passengers at their home and drops them off at the front doors of the stores. Riders should call the center 11 a.m. on the Friday before they want to ride the bus. The bus starts picking up at 9:30 a.m. The bus will pick up at the store at 12:30 p.m., except on the days the bus goes to the Westfarms or Meriden malls, when pickups will be at 4:15 p.m. A handicapped bus is available, however, passengers need to call the senior center and let them know a bus is needed to be put on the list.

Surfing
Seniors

Surfing Seniors will be held Thursday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to noon, at the senior center. Topic is discovering the variety of resources available on the Plainville Public Library’s Web site that participants can access from home including renewing books, placing items on hold and more. ‘Weight 4
me’ class

A program called “Weight 4 Me” will be held at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., Friday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. It helps an individual achieve the healthy weight that is right for the participant. The program is designed to help learn and practice the skills needed to increase physical activity to burn more calories, control portions and appetite, shift selections towards fruits, vegetables and whole grains, low fat, low calorie choices that contribute to healthy weight and handle emotional and social challenges of weight control. Whether the goal is to lose weight, maintain or gain weight, get support from the group that will meet every three weeks.

Cooking
class

A cooking class will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. Scott Minor will teach in the café a class in exotic cooking and interesting food preparation. He will be preparing chicken tikki masala and vegetarian curry dish that contains cauliflower, potatoes, peas and chickpeas. Recipes and samples will be shared with the group. There is a cost to participate.

Caregiving
Connections

Caregiving Connections will meet at 10 a.m. at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. The group will meet on the third Tuesday of the month in the game room (former Peak Center, off the green room). The next meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Living a gluten-
free life

The first meeting of the new support group for those who are interested in wheat-free living or who have a loved one who has been diagnosed with celiac or gluten sensitivity will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m., at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. The group will meet on the third Wednesday of each month. Join the group for a cup of tea and learn more about how to cope and experience living wheat-free.

Free beginners
workshop

A free beginners’ computer workshop will be held at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., Wednesday, Feb. 17 and 24 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will be able to learn about hardware and software, learn what the computer has to offer using easy to understand language and exercises, and hands-on experience with one volunteer teacher per two students.

Friends Helping
Friends to meet

Friends Helping Friends will meet Friday, Feb. 19, 11:30 a.m., at J. Timothy’s Taverne, 143 New Britain Ave.

Filling out
the census

On Friday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m., there will be an interactive presentation by Jewel McKenzie, partnership specialist for the Department of Commerce, Census Bureau. Participants will learn who should fill out the census, why it is important, and if it is safe to give out information.

cabaret

Mardi Gras will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 22, 4 p.m., at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. Participants can listen to jazz while sipping on flavorful mocktails. A mocktail is a cocktail without the alcohol. People are welcome to wear beads.

Open poetry
reading

Peter Chase, Plainville library director, will have a poetry reading Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. at the senior center. Those who have written poetry are welcome to bring their poems to share. The poets can read their poems or Chase can read them.

party

The Committee on Aging Card Party to benefit Dial-A-Ride will be held Sunday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. (snow date Sunday, March 7). There will be door prizes, raffle and refreshments. Tickets are available at the front desk or at the door.

The Plainville Senior Citizens Center Bowling League announced Senior Citizens Center Bowling League results for the week of Jan. 25:

Ham bone club — George Boucher - 2.

Turkey club — George Boucher-2, Jerry Tracey-2, Tom Loiselle, Jim Stuart, Paul Bell, Rocky Roberts.

The league is still short two bowlers to have 14 teams. The league meets at Laurel Lanes, 136 New Britain Ave., Plainville, Mondays, at 1 p.m. which includes three games of bowling, shoes, open bowling discount card, automatic scoring and free weekly beverage. Bowlers of all abilities, including beginners, are welcome to join this fun league. There is a fee to bowl.
