Participants in programs at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., must be 60 or older and be a resident of Plainville, or be a member of the senior citizens center, unless noted. Homecare,
assisted living

Attorney Marilyn Denny, from Greater Hartford Legal Services, will visit the Plainville Senior Center, Friday, March 12, at 10 a.m., to talk about homecare and assisted living programs.

Weight 4
Me class

Weight 4 Me will be held at the Plainville Senior Center Fridays, March 12 and 26, at 11 a.m. The group will continue towards a lifetime of healthy, weight management. At each meeting the group will learn ways to build healthy habits and reinforce the tips the participants learned in previous meetings and continue to support each other along the way.

Marlin-Rockwell
retirees to meet

Every month, retirees from local companies are invited to gather and reminisce with fellow retirees and relive past work memories over a cup of coffee at the senior center. The center will host retirees from the Marlin-Rockwell Company on Thursday, March 18 at 10 a.m. This is open to the public.

Dental clinic
at senior center

A dental clinic will be held at the Plainville Senior Center on Mondays, March 15, April 19; Tuesday, April 20; Monday, July 12 and Sept. 20 by appointment only by Community Health Affiliates. A registered dental hygienist will provide a dental hygiene exam, dental cleaning, sealants when appropriate and x-rays when appropriate. The program is intended for adults who have not received dental care in the last year and have difficulty accessing dental care in the community.

There is a charge for the clinic; scholarships are made possible in part by a grant through the Older Americans Act through the North Central Area Agency on Aging. An enrollment form will need to be completed prior to the appointment.

Café
cabaret

On Monday, March 15, at 4 p.m., there will be a St. Patrick’s Day party with live jazz music with some of the favorite Irish tunes by musician Al Leone. There is a fee to attend and a "mocktail" — a cocktail without the alcohol — will be served.

Easy movie
maker course

An easy movie maker course will be offered at the Plainville Senior Center for three sessions on Wednesdays, March 17, 24 and 31, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. There is a fee for the course. In this computer course participants can learn how to import video clips and still photos onto the computer as well as import music, narration and sounds, create an auto-movie with titles an end credit screens, and “burn” the movie to a compact disc or DVD.

Free tax help
at senior center

AARP Tax-Aide, a free program provides income tax preparation assistance for low and middle income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to those 60 years and older at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. on Tuesdays through April 13. To schedule and appointment or for more information call the senior center at (860) 747-5728.

Census form
assistance

The 2010 Census Bureau has established a census questionnaire assistance center at the Plainville Senior Center, from Monday, March 22 until Friday, April 16. A Census Bureau representative will be at the senior center to help answer questions people may have about the 2010 Census forms and to provide assistance in completing the forms. The representatives will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and on Tuesdays, 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There is no appointment necessary and it is open to the public.

helpers needed

Bingo callers and helpers are needed Wednesdays, from 12:30 to 2:45 p.m., at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St.

Coffee with a
social worker

Seniors who have questions about Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Part D, Medicare Savings Program, housing options, where to find Alzheimer’s disease help in the community, caregiving, homecare, etc. can stop by the game room in the Plainville Senior Center Monday, March 22, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and talk with Stephanie. No registration is necessary. She’ll serve coffee.

Free groceries
from Foodshare

The Foodshare Organization delivers free food to low income individuals. Plainville has been chosen to have a Mobile Foodshare site at the Plainville Housing Authority, 20 Stillwell Drive, Sunset Community Room on Monday, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Groceries are distributed every other Monday. The next distribution will be March 22.

This program is available to Plainville residents who are at least 62 years old or permanently disabled under the Social Security Act. The first time in the program, bring proof of age and residency.

Caregiving
Connections

Caregiving Connections will meet at 10 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month in the game room (former Peak Center, off the green room). The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 16.

Computer
course two

Computer course two will be offered Fridays, March 19, 26, April 9, 16, and 23, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, at the senior center. This course is for those who already have some knowledge and confidence on the computer or who have take course one. The group will further explore the capabilities of the personal computer, touch on spreadsheets, data bases, and word processing that will prepare students for more advanced classes.

Injury assessment,
prevention clinic

On Friday, March 19, at 10 a.m., there will be a lecture about injury assessment and prevention with Eric Williams, head athletic trainer at Plainville High School. He will provide an injury assessment for those who have an injury and he will discuss steps that can be taken to help prevent injuries from occurring. As a certified athletic are professional, recognized by the State of Connecticut, he is a licensed health care provider who specializes in the prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletically related injuries.

Senior stars
dance showcase

Health Net Senior Showcase will be held at the Plainville Senior Center Thursday, March 25, from 1 to 2 p.m. Dances may include but are not limited to the waltz, foxtrot, tango, quickstep, polka, rumba, cha-cha, swing, merengue, mambo, hustle. No professional dancers. Bob Lupini and his Stuck on You Band will play for the dancers and audience. The dancing will be judged on originality, interpretation of music/expression, demonstration of the character and rhythm of the dance, entertainment value and partnership connection. The audience will vote for the best performers by secret ballot.

Competitors and audience members should register in advance at the senior center.

Mobile kiosk
for seniors

Connecticut Center for Healthy Aging Mobile Kiosk for Seniors will be held Monday, April 5, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Marc Levesque, senior resource care manager, will visit the senior center to provide critical information about services available to individuals 60 and over and their families, as well as complete need assessments for services such as financial assistance, home care, help in the home, medical questions, etc. He will also help seniors complete a medication record for use with their medical professionals. Individuals, caregivers and family members are welcome to visit the mobile kiosk; appointments are not necessary. The mobile kiosk is sponsored in part by grants from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s Catalyst Fund.

Volunteers
needed

The Plainville Senior Center Computer Lab, 200 East St., is looking for volunteers who would like to teach computer classes or coaches who would like to help the instructors. The center will provide the training and the curriculum.

Mindful
meditation

Mindful Meditation with Megan Mitchell will be held Mondays, March 22 to April 26, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mindful meditation is a way of developing the skills to understand what is happening in one’s life, a way of taking charge and control, intentionally and thoroughly working with stress, pain, confusion, and the challenges and demands of everyday life. This class is for all levels, from beginners to those with meditation experience. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a blanket, as meditation cools the body down, and a cushion for seated meditation. Meditations will include movement, walking and breathing exercises. There is a cost for the series.

Bus goes
door to door

The shopping bus provides door-to-door transportation to shopping destinations on Mondays. The bus picks up passengers at their home and drops them off at the front doors of the stores. Riders should call the center 11 a.m. on the Friday before they want to ride the bus. The bus starts picking up at 9:30 a.m. The bus will pick up at the store at 12:30 p.m., except on the days the bus goes to the Westfarms or Meriden malls, when pickups will be at 4:15 p.m. A handicapped bus is available, however, passengers need to call the senior center and let them know a bus is needed to be put on the list.

Open bridge
on Tuesdays

Open bridge is held at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. New members are welcome. No sign up is necessary.

Achieving
peak power

The Peak Power program, offered at the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St., is a six week program of exercises designed by a personal fitness consultant to help individuals achieve goals of better health and fitness.

Participants will meet with a trainer prior to the beginning of their program. At that time, goals will be established, baseline measurements of cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, height, weight, body measurements, body composition, and a flexibility evaluation will be recorded. For the next six weeks the participants will meet to exercise together and evaluate their program. Measurements will be done half way through the program and again at the end. Graduation from the program, after six weeks, will include a guide for future goal achievement and T-shirts will be awarded.

The next session will be held Monday, April 5 to May 17 at 3 p.m. There is a program limit of six participants per session and there is a fee. Scholarships are available upon request. See Ronda or Shawn for scholarship information.

Store
open

The Plainville Senior Citizens Center store, 200 East St., is open to the public. Items include jewelry, purses, candy and men’s ties. Store hours are Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are needed to staff the store.
