Free groceries
from Foodshare
The Foodshare Organization delivers free food to low income individuals. Plainville has been chosen to have a Mobile Foodshare site at the Plainville Housing Authority, 20 Stillwell Drive, Sunset Community Room on Monday, Dec. 14 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. The Dec. 28 distribution has been cancelled. The free food program will resume Monday, Jan. 11 and continue every other week.
This program is available to Plainville residents who are at least 62 years old or permanently disabled under the Social Security Act. The first time in the program, bring proof of age and residency.

Vote for
‘senior idols’
Earlier this year, members of area senior centers were invited to compete in “Senior Idols,” which is similar to the popular TV show, “American Idol.” Walter Reckert and Karen Casey, members of the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, were among the finalists. People can vote for their favorite performer online at www.youtube.com/healthnetseniorstars. Search for them by name; they are included in the Newington listings because that is where they performed in the regional competition.
History of
jury duty
A program about the history and importance of jury duty, one of the responsibilities of citizenship, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m., at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St. It is the backbone of the legal system. Shari Lea DeLuca, jury outreach coordinator, will talk about the history of the sixth and seventh amendment, how people are called to serve and the questions people have about not serving on a jury if you are older than 70.

The Plainville Senior Citizens Center store, 200 East St., is open to the public. Items include jewelry, purses, candy and men’s ties. Currently the store hours are Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Cooking
demonstration
A cooking demonstration will take place at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., on Monday, Dec. 14, at 10:30 a.m. Scott Minor, senior center volunteer, will be working in the new café demonstrating how to create a restaurant-style panini. He will also share tips on cooking chicken marsala.
Minor trained at the New York State University at Delhi, N.Y., in restaurant management and food preparation; he was a restaurant owner in upstate New York.

Christmas Day
dinner
Plainville residents or senior center members, 60 years of age or older who will be alone this Christmas, Dec. 25, are invited to come to the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., and join in a homemade Christmas dinner with all the trimmings at 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will provide transportation for those who need a ride to the center. People should call the senior center before Monday, Dec. 21 to register and also indicate if they need a ride.

Learn about
Siberian huskies
People of all ages are welcome to meet Kathy and Bill Lesinski and Ka-Bi’s Siberian huskies on Monday, Dec. 28, at 3 p.m., at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., and bring the grandchildren. Kathy has been dogsled racing since 2003 and has four top-10 finishes this past year, including a first place finish. They will give a talk about their kennel of 19 Siberians. They will describe their set-up in East Windsor, how they train for dogsled racing, where they race and type of races they compete in. They will bring some of their race team to view and Kai, their agility dog who is currently ranked fifth in the country for Siberians competing in agility. and power of attorney
Greater Hartford Legal is offering an opportunity to have health care directives and/or power of attorney prepared free of charge for persons 60 years of age or older. Call (860) 541-5003 and speak to Lucy Martinez. This opportunity is partially funded by a grant through the federal government.
Free program helps seniors
stay in their homes
The holidays may be a time of warmth, family and good cheer, but some senior citizens can feel very isolated and lonely during the holiday season. This can lead to problems with mental and physical health, and in extreme cases, thoughts of suicide. Wheeler Clinic’s Senior Emotional Health Outreach Plus Care Program fulfills a need by providing free care management services right in the senior’s home. A unique collaboration between Wheeler Clinic, Care Management Associates (a division of Connecticut Community Care Inc.) and the Greater Bristol Visiting Nurse Association, SEHOP-CP is available to residents over the age of 60 in Bristol, Burlington, Plainville and Plymouth.
“SEHOP-CP addresses every aspect of a senior’s life – physical, emotional and social,” said Laura Minor, MS, PA, CPP-R, program coordinator of Wheeler Clinic’s prevention, wellness and recovery. “It connects seniors to caring professionals who can identify and deal with many issues including depression that can result from isolation,” “Seniors can also call our mental health hotline just to talk – any time day or night, seven days a week.
SEHOP-CP’s free services include: In-home consultations and assistance in identifying needed services; 24-hour/7-day a week mental health and referral hotline: (860) 747-3434; assistance with entitlement program applications; coordination of services needed to help seniors stay at home; an on-line comprehensive resource guide listing local care agencies, resources, and other senior-specific services (available at www.ctclearinghouse.org); in-home psychiatric nursing care. United Way of West Central Connecticut funds the program.

without wheat
The Healthier without Wheat program will be held at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. Join the senior center for a presentation given by the center’s nurse to gain a new understanding about wheat allergies. Included will be a cooking demonstration by Scott Minor, chef and former restaurant owner. He will demonstrate how people can use ingredients found at a local grocery store to cook meals without wheat.

Charlemagne
Plainville Senior Citizen Center members who are interested in playing Charlemagne, an old favorite French card game, are invited to come to the senior center on Wednesdays, at 1 p.m.

Aerobics
with Ann
Aerobics with Ann Fargo will be held at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., on Mondays, Jan. 4 to March 1, from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. There will be no classes Jan. 18 or Feb. 15. This class will include 5 to 10 minutes of warm-ups, 25 minutes of standing cardio and 15 minutes of strength training, all conducted to the beat of familiar music. This class is for men and women.

to memoir
From memory to memoir writing and preserving a personal life story will be held at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., on Fridays, Feb. 5 to March 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will learn how to turn memories of significant events into a memoir for future generations. Get tips on what pictures and documents to include and how to self publish a story. No previous writing experience required.

Ceramics
on Thursdays
The Plainville Senior Citizens Center, 200 East St., will offer ceramics on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Participants will learn how to choose a piece of green ware, clean it, paint it and glaze it. No pre-registration required. The instructor, Gloria Cerniglia, has been teaching ceramics since 1983. She has two certifications in ceramic instruction and continues to attend classes and seminars to learn new techniques. She has been an instructor at the senior center for more than 12 years.

Bus goes
door to door
The shopping bus provides door-to-door transportation to shopping destinations on Mondays. The bus picks up passengers at their home and drops them off at the front doors of the stores. Riders should call the center 11 a.m. on the Friday before they want to ride the bus. The bus starts picking up at 9:30 a.m. The bus will pick up at the store at 12:30 p.m., except on the days the bus goes to the Westfarms or Meriden malls, when pickups will be at 4:15 p.m. A handicapped bus is available, but passengers need to call the senior center and let them know a bus is needed to be put on the list.

Back by popular demand, the Plainville Senior Citizens Center members are invited to the senior center on Mondays, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., for a discussion of local, state and national current events. This program was previously called Contemporary Issues.

At-risk list
being compiled
The Town of Plainville is concerned about the well-being of individuals who are at risk in the event of an electrical power outage. The Plainville Police Department and the Plainville Senior Citizens Center maintain a list of individuals at risk. If residents are not on the At-Risk List and need to be, call the senior center at (860) 747-5728. Individuals of any age, who have medical problems dependent on electrical power to operate medical equipment, should be on the list.
In the event of an electrical power outage, individuals with health risks and no other alternative should call the Plainville Police Department at (860) 747-1616. Neither the police nor the senior center will call the resident.
Do not call the police department to report a power outage or to inquire when the power will be back on, call the Connecticut Light and Power Company at (860) 947-2000, option number one. In a true emergency call 9-1-1.
Easy Movie
Maker course
The Plainville Senior Citizens Center is offering a three-session easy Movie Maker course on Tuesdays, Jan. 19 through Feb. 2, 9:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how easy it is to use the Windows Movie Maker 2 software. This software provides the tools needed to create, edit and share home movies, compile and edit a movie of video clips, with drag-and-drop functionality, and add special effects, music and narration.
